One of many wonders of the world is a specific, but huge crater in the heart of the Kara Kum desert in Turkmenistan (Central Asia) that local residents named “Door to Hell”. This name shouldn’t be surprising if we take into an account that this crater has been burning for 40 years now. This fiery crater emerged completely by accident when the ground under a Soviet drilling rig gave way as early as in 1971. Fearing that this crater could release toxic gas, scientists decided to set it on fire, predicting that it will burn off in a few days. However, the fire they’ve started still burns. It is estimated that the volume of the natural gas found in this sinkhole is one of the largest in the world.
