Zaton is a picturesque bay near Dubrovnik, and a popular tourist destination of all those who wish to relax on the beach or maybe a rock, and spend a nice day under the sun, in the pine tree shade, or perhaps at one of the nearby restaurants with a great offer of regional delicacies.
From the historical point of view, this beautiful area is filled with Renaissance manor houses of former rich Dubrovnik noblemen, such as those of Menčetić, Palmotić, Lukarević families… These places paint a known image of Dubrovnik countryside.
Moreover, the bay is home to the St. Stephen Parish Church built in the 10th century. This area is also recognized by salt pans previously owned by the said noblemen.
Four neatly bound settlements found there home here. Veliki (Big) and Mali (Small) Zaton, Štikovica and Vrbica, and their inhabitants who are involved in tourism, as well as hospitality management, fishing and trade.
The natural beauty of this area is also worth mentioning, or to be more exact, the natural clean water springs of Vrelo located in the lower part of the bay, once used to get the old mills going.
The beauty and appeal of Zaton are good enough reasons to set aside some time to go and visit this place, and enjoy everything it has to offer.
