According to an inscription from 1502, the Trsteno Arboretum is considered to be the oldest Renaissance garden in Dalmatia. Today, it’s the only arboretum left in the entire Mediterranean part of Croatia.
It’s rich in exotic plants, such as two massive plane trees over 400 years old, unique examples of this species in Europe, which have found their home on the square in front of the Arboretum. At the end of the 15th century, Ivan Gučetić built his summer house in the Gothic-Renaissance style, with a chapel and a garden.
The Arboretum with its exotic vegetation, apart from massive plane trees, palms, eucalyptus, and camphor, houses stone columns, and as of 1736, a fountain depicting Neptune and the Nymphs.
And so, thanks to this beautiful Renaissance garden, Trsteno has been known as a small coastal place with rich history, and 500 year-old natural monuments – gigantic Asian plane trees, as well as a viewpoint of the Sea and islands.
