Vitturi Park – a landscape monument

Kaštela, featured by Dalmatian beauty, situated right next to the sea in a surrounding of pleasant weather conditions, increasingly attract many foreign tourists. This place offers a variety of things to experience – historical sites, religious heritage, Dalmatian architecture, parks, Biblical garden, ancient olive tree, natural beauty of Kozjak etc. This time we will introduce you to a significant and famous Vitturi Park that was raised in the second half of the 18th century by a nobleman from Kaštel Lukšić, Radoš Michelli Vitturi, as the first garden in Kaštela. This is also evidenced by a voting painting of the Vitturi family that dates back to around 1760. It shows a figure of saint Roch who is holding the park on its palm, characterized by classicism frame and renaissance and baroque embroidery. It is situated at the Kaštel Lukšić coast with an area of almost 8 hectares and has become protected monument of nature and culture because its area and an access from the sea represent a unique monument of our old horticulture. Similar parks in Dalmatia are scarcely preserved so this one, in addition to the Gučetić Park in Trsteno, the Garagnin Park in Trogir and the Borelli Park in Sv. Filip i Jakov, makes a valuable contribution to Croatian garden architecture”. The park contains preserved embroidery boxwood, several old cypress trees, aleppo pine tree, pine and laurel trees and other. This place also contains interesting exotic trees like firmiana simplex (varnish tree) of the cocoa family, fragrant calycanthus, just to name a few. For a certain period of time the park was neglected, however, this has changed and now it is regularly maintained. Experts emphasize that a complete park redecoration requires a comprehensive study involving historical analysis, conceptual and implementation activities and the commencement of restoration measures and revitalization of the park so it could become one of the main tourist attractions. We hope this idea will soon bear fruit and that Kaštela will receive another tourist peculiarity in all its glory. .
