Probably everyone from Croatia has heard of the famous song by Oliver Dragojević, called Skalinada (Stairway), words of the song reverberating in each person creating various visual and emotional effects, calling upon different life situations, times, memories through life inspired by the encounter with the stairway. Climbing through the dense structure of the old urban settlement Varoš, each facade of a house, every encounter of a yard and a square form a unique carpet leading to the greatest treasure of the town Split. When one mentions staircase in this town, probably many would remember the stairs which lead to Marjan.
Many, many times you have probably passed through the stairway running, hopping or trudging patiently on the way to the destination. You might have even experienced how your thoughts wonder as if time stood still while you cross over each of the endless stairs individual in their shape, height, structure, width, raising emotions in you, making you to step away, at least for a moment, from the everyday life situations.
Stairway, as the famous song says – „where one ascends, where one descends, where is the fate, where is the hope is comprised of approximately eight hundred stairs which lead to the top of Split beauty, Marjan, i.e. belvedere from where one can absorb the view of ‘the most beautiful town in the world’.
