Spice up the holidays with cinnamon

The holiday spirit is everywhere around town – all the decorations have been carefully put in their place a month ago, and almost every little corner serves as a stage for carol singers.
Since this is also the time of year when a cold likes to pay us a visit, I’ve decided to start drinking more warm and healthy beverages. And so, inspired by the magic around me, I bought a cinnamon & apple tea simply because every time I hear somebody mention Christmas, I immediately think – cinnamon. Apart from its beautiful scent, it’s also a very healthy spice. Here’s why.

In the ancient times, it was valued more than gold because of its numerous health benefits. Studies have shown that it regulates blood sugar levels which is very important for diabetics, and those of us who’re looking to lose a pound or two.
If you have problems with cholesterol, you should know that cinnamon helps lower you ”bad” cholesterol, also known as LDL cholesterol. If you already have it under control, you’ve significantly reduced the risk of heart diseases.
Other studies have shown that cinnamon has an antibacterial effect, especially in the case of H. Pylori bacteria which can be found in the stomach, and is the only of its kind that can survive in such acidic conditions. It also helps relieve pain during that time of month, and is known to help with fertility problems.

Cinnamon is rich in dietary fiber, calcium, iron and magnesium. As for vitamins, it consists of vitamins K and C, the latter one being a powerful antioxidant which protects our body from the damaging effect free radicals can have on our cells.
Try mixing some honey with cinnamon and you’ll get a perfect combination which can ease your arthritis pain. Apart from all the listed health benefits, try adding it to cakes you plan to bake this Christmas, and you’ll see just how delicious they can be.
