Smokvica derived its name after a small fig, but it is not famous for figs, but for the wine Pošip. It is a picturesque little place hidden at the foothill of Vela and Mala obala, protected from all winds and opened to the sun and sea, located on a place of landscape diversity where the island Korčula is the widest. Cut through by the ancient passages and roads, Smokvica is surrounded with surreal nature, vineyards and olive groves, in particular. Along with Čara, Smokvica is often regarded as a homeland of Pošip, one of Croatian best known wines.
Stone houses, idyllic streets, rich cultural heritage, centuries old vineyards and olive groves contribute to the charm of this insular place that always seem to lead you back to the ancient times.
The place is dominated by the parish Church of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary with its big bell tower, Vela and Mala pjaca (Large and Small square) and 17th century lodge, while the old historic centre is on the rise not far from a little St Michael’s Church. Walking paths, cycling tracks, sailing, fishing, navigation, diving, grape and olive harvest, sport activities in general, are only some ways to actively spend vacation in Smokvica and Čara. Specially interesting are Christmas and New Year-related upcoming events in addition to carnival traditions later on. Still, perhaps the most memorable scenes are those in vineyards where vine grapes are aligned like some pregnant queens just waiting for their coronation. These scenes are typical for this time of year – grape harvest, when all generations diligently work in vineyards.
