Religious beauty of Blato

The beauty and climate of Blato on Korčula will surely leave you breathless. And not only that. Its delicacies, rich offer, as well as historic monuments and a possibility of an active vacation are just some of the things that will encourage you to pay a visit to this place.

Religious facilities, situated in the middle of this lively environment, closely packed in narrow, stone cobbled streets, or in the very center of an olive orchard or vineyard, tell a special story. They should be on your list of things to see, after a long walk or a bike ride since bicycle and hiking trails pass right by them.

The Blato Municipality consists of 33 churches and chapels, the oldest ones dating back to the 14th century, that is, to the time of the first parish records. Apart from the parish church, there are numerous churches carrying the names of holy people, like that of St. Mark, St. John, St. Martin, St. Michael, Ss. Cosmas and Damian, as well as the Church of Our Lady of the Field, and the Holy Cross Church. Archaeological findings have shown that some of these churches were built on the grounds of early Christian period structures. The Church of Our Lady of the Field is especially valuable since it was built on the grounds of a countryside villa, today’s apartment and commercial building.

Blato is, as you can imagine by now, an interesting destination with a lot of activities during off season as well. Come see for yourself everything this place and the amiable locals have to offer.
