Prozor Fortress, situated above today’s Vrlika, was built at the turn of the 15th century in the area that belonged to the Duke of Cetina – Ivaniš Nelipić. The Fortress was mentioned in the records from 1406 when Vrlika and its surrounding area were under the rule of Hrvoje Vukčić Hrvatinić, a Bosnian nobleman and Herzog of Split.
It has stood the test of time which is why it is regarded as one of the most important medieval fortresses in the Dalmatian hinterland. It is characterized by irregular shape with the living quarter that belonged to the governor in charge, and the entrance located in the west and protected by a curved wall. The south, inaccessible side of this complex was secured by a wall built on a cliff. Time has left its mark on this interesting object, and so the restoration process began in 1988 with the single aim – to preserve and enable the use of this unique medieval fortress.
Prozor Fortress is also a part of the Register of Cultural Goods of Croatia which makes it even more popular among the tourists and history enthusiasts, as well as those interested in photography.
