Thanks to its remarkable beauty, the Čikola River Canyon has been protected since 1965. The Čikola River, the largest tributary of the Krka River, emerges near the village of Čavoglave, runs through the town of Drniš, and drains into the Krka River near Torak Lake. The section of the Čikola River protected as a significant landscape encompasses the area from Drniš to approximately 1 km downstream of the new bridge for Miljevci across the River. It’s known for its very deep canyon which is an extraordinary geomorphological phenomenon. The site is also an important hydrological karst phenomenon. In some places the karst is up to 170 m deep, in other words, it is a perfect place for rock climbers, tourists, joggers and nature lovers.
In order for this protected site to attract more visitors, the following activities have been planned – reconstruction of an old mill on Čikola, approach route from Drniš Gradina, adapting and equipping 40 canyon locations for free climbing, exploring and preserving, visiting Štrikinica cave, and adapting 10 km of canyoning routes, lookout, parking and promenade on the lower course of Čikola.
