The Pantan Watermill, located halfway between Split and Trogir, has a unique mix of natural and historic heritage. The renovated Renaissance watermill with significant features of fortification represents an important example of industrial architecture.
The Watermill encompasses as many as 12 springs which form a lake, nestled in a wide sea lagoon. The mills are located in a large fortification structure on the edge of the lake. Wheat would reach the mills via land, or to be more accurate, thanks to cattle, while islanders and people who lived in the coastal areas, used the Rika river to transport wheat on their sailboats. The very mouth of the said river still has remnants of a fortification.
Moreover, this marsh is a popular nesting ground, a small animal reservation of sorts, which welcomes different species, from eels to storks, herons, ducks, as well as, seagulls, grebes and so on. Nowadays, this fish and bird paradise has become a popular tourist destination, what with the help of a restaurant which offers local and international specialties and quality wines. Pantan also provides you with a one of a kind experience – staying at the watermill fortification, and enjoying bird watching sessions in the fall, thanks to numerous marsh species that have already recognized the beauty of this place, as one of their many migratory rest stops.
