Medieval tombstones, witnesses of time…

Stećci or medieval stone tombstones are scattered across Croatia, Dalmatia and southern Croatia (Konavle area) in particular. These are actually monolith stone monuments which used to be a part of a cemetery situated right next to small village chapels, and one place remarkably rich in these tombstones, in the southern Croatian region, is necropolis in Dubravka near St Barbara’s Church, but many of them can also be found in Mihanići, Gabrile, Brotnice and Pridvorje near a parish church. These medieval tombstones contain carved illustrations from a life of the deceased and inscriptions in medieval alphabet – Bosnian Cyrillic. It is indisputable that stećci have a particular monumental value, and are definitively one of the most remarkable material symbols of the medieval period (from the 13th to the end of the 15th century).
