Beautiful island Lopud is situated in the north-west from Dubrovnik town and is one of the Elaphiti Islands. Remaining members of this “maritime family” are Daksa, Koločep, Sv. Andrija (St Andrew), Ruda, Šipan, Jakljan, Tajan and Olipa. These are mostly small and uninhabited islands characterized by attractive and unspoiled nature.
North-east side of Lopud island cannot be accessed easily due to the karst terrain and slippery rocks, while the coastal line is some 12 km long, 1.2 km of which make stunning pebble beaches. Even though this island has over 2 584 hours of sun annually, yet its natural water sources maintain its green scenery with a variety of trees, coppice, plants and numerous palm trees. Local park is known as a garden of the 19th century villa that has a plant collection containing diverse plants from all over the world like bamboo and different types of cactuses.
Since the island has already been inhabited for several thousands years, there are many landmarks and ruins of the ancient Greek, Roman and Slavic origin which confirm that.
As of 1457 Lopud has become one of the regional centres of the Republic of Ragusa (Dubrovnik) and many ship owners from the island had their own fleet with about 80 ships and their own shipyard as well. Moreover, the island is a real treasury of religious heritage which includes 36 churches, in addition to monasteries that had been raised by the Franciscans and Benedictines.
Lopud is the most developed among the Elaphiti Islands. Tourism flourishes thanks to the natural beauty “settled” on the island, and a gorgeous Šunj bay with a pebble beach, one of the most beautiful at the Adriatic coast, stands to this as a witness.
If you seek a peaceful vacation, wonderful nature, some recreation perhaps, but not too much, nice meal and a fine glass of wine, visit this place. Lopud expects you with arms wide open.
