Siberian-like Imotski in 2012

Winter is about to break before our doors. A few more days to come and we will enter, according to the calendar, into the coldest part of the year. Coats are ready, firewood, gas, heating oil, electric heating. Somebody has more, somebody less, but supposedly enough for the winter. Dear Terracon News’ readers, we will awaken memories of one hell of a winter from the early February in 2012 in Imotski and the Imotski Region. On the transition from the third to the fourth of February a penetration of cold air from Siberia (!) has caught one big part of Dalmatia, and Dalmatian hinterland in particular. Some older people from Imotski claim this was maybe the heaviest winter ever recorded in Imotski. Certain places in Imotski were covered with thick layers of snow, up to five metres high, accumulated by the blowing snow. Every form of normal life functioning had ceased. Shops closed, roads impassable, and no phone lines at the time in villages of the region.

Aržano cut off from the world, people reporting their whole houses were buried in snow. White cataclysm. Still, driven by journalist curiosity and strained efforts we managed to capture only a small portion of what people from Imotski actually experienced. Two days later we succeed to get through to Aržano. People started to come out from their homes. Through windows mostly, since the doors couldn’t be reached or passed through. Before the event famous Blue Lake in Imotski run out of water. Dried out completely. And then suddenly – buried in snow. These photographs are unique probably recording for the first time such an event! In one word – nice, but hopefully never to be repeated again! In order to melt away this white Siberian desert, take a look at some photographs of the Blue Lake under the snow. The one snow that actually could be tolerated.
