Ice cream in winter – why not?

When you think ‘ice cream’, what’s the first thing that pops into your head? Perhaps the sea, beach, good times? Would you be surprised to hear that it’s preferable to eat ice cream in the winter than it is in the summer? Don’t worry, the question mark that appeared above your head won’t stay there for long; when you finish reading this article, you’ll see there’s more logic behind the statement than you expected.
Ice cream is often the main culprit when we get the flu. Yes, we might experience slight tension or a strange sensation in the throat but that happens due to narrowing of the blood vessels caused by cold weather, not the flu. And yes, we get the flu in the winter time more so than in the summer but the temperature is not to blame. People spend more time indoors where they come into contact with potentially dangerous microbes. The flu isn’t caused by the food, it’s caused by viruses and bacteria. When we decide to have an ice cream in the winter months, our body temperature gets adjusted to its surroundings and by doing so, reduces cold shock response. This, as expected, isn’t a favourable setting for microbes. On the other hand, drinking hot or warm tea is advised during the summer months because our body needs to adjust its temperature which leads to reduction of excessive sweat.
Ice cream is a treat many of us eat all year long because of all the nice flavours which affect our mood positively. However, we need to take care of the fat and calorie side of the ice cream story – make sure you go easy on the amount you take in.
Another thing worth mentioning is milk – the base of every ice cream – which gives it calcium, phosphorus and vitamin B. Calcium is an important mineral when it comes to keeping our teeth and bones healthy.
Ice cream is a delicacy liked by all age groups; so don’t fear the flu in the winter, go grab a scoop of your favourite ice cream flavour and enjoy!
