Historical findings of Cista Velika

The area of Cista Velika is rich in historical findings: Medieval tombstones, fortresses and wells from the Ottoman reign. Here are some photographs taken in Crljivica and Zadužbina. Crljivica is a place famous for well-preserved numerous tombstones. On a small elevated terrain we find six tombstones of sacrophagi, four cases and one plate. They are all mostly adorned with the plain ornaments. The very terrain, where Medieval tombstones are situated is nothing but an old cemetery. Former large terrain (cemetery) is now cut in two by the paved road Imotski -Trilj that has 100 x 30m in diameter. The whole area has 16 tombstones – sacrophagi, 56 cases and 15 plates.
Let’s just add that Zadužbina is the name of the well that once provided water for the cattle. It is assumed it used to be in the ownership of some Ottoman bey. It is also the largest well in these areas.
