Grohote is situated along the Šolta field where it intersects with the road leading to the main port Rogač, which connects the two most distant places on the island – Stomorska and Maslinica. The oldest and the largest settlement on the island is also the island’s centre. Its residents were mostly lime makers, farmers and fishermen. A historical perspective of the island’s way of life is authentically presented in some scenes of the famous Croatian television series Velo misto, a great part of the series being recorded precisely in Grohote. Narrow streets of this place where a home to some of the most famous Croatian painters like Eugen Buktenica, Marin Kalajzić, Dinko Sule and Vicko Buktenica. This rural settlement was formed in the Ancient period, as numerous architectural landmarks from this period and lifestyle still reflect, yet, the first official records of Grohote date in the y. 1370. Some remains of the parish church in addition to the remains of the early Christian basilica dedicated to Stephan, the First Martyr, are now in the place of the former church from 1576. Eastern from the church, which dominates the settlement with its massive bell-tower, is a local, very picturesque old graveyard. Nearby one can even see the resting place of Croatian most prominent female poet of the 20th century – Vesna Parun, whose mother was from Šolta.
The centre of the settlement is dominated with the Slavić tower, once in a propriety of a feudal family from Split, Slavić, and today a protected monument and a municipality building. Enchanted with the seen, relax and have a drink and afterwards visit a local small market or a store too.
