Diamonds are a girl’s best friend, sang famous Marilyn Monroe in the legendary American movie “Gentlemen Prefer Blondies”, while another American icon, Audrey Hepburn, in the movie “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” was enchanted precisely with the diamonds she had seen in a window. And really, this rock of absolute purity fascinates women all around the world. Almost any woman as a girl has fantasized at least once in her life that her Mr Prince Charming proposes her to merry with a “house-big” diamond.
Diamonds are a synonym for beauty, purity and foremost luxury, in other words, perfection of the Mother Nature. They emerge in the Earth’s crust as a result of high pressure and temperature in a carbon-rich surrounding, and the come out on the surface through volcano eruptions. Interestingly, diamonds and graphite actually have identical chemical constitution, but the difference lies in a bond between the atoms. Namely, in a diamond the carbon atoms are arranged tetrahedrally by covalent bonding while the graphite bonds are loose. This is why graphite is soft, unlike diamond which is the world’s hardest element ever discovered. .
Being a synonym for purity and extraordinary strength and durability, they are equally synonymous to the eternal love, firm, stable, unbreakable bond. This is the reason why many men engage with their significant others with a diamond ring regardless of their financial background; it can be the smallest rock in the world, still, as long as it is a diamond, it matters. However, in a world of power, abundance and luxury it all comes in oversized packages and so do the diamonds that used to grace bodies of numerous divas, rich women, noble women, aristocracy.
Presently, some of the most famous diamonds, whose value and quality cannot even be determined are cut diamonds –The Star of Africa, weighing incredible 530 carats, followed by the Hope Diamond to which an interesting legend is also related. Accordingly, the Hope Diamond was in the 17th century found in India by one French merchant traveller. Later on the diamond is sold to the Louis XIV, the king of France, and already here starts misfortune for the owner of this diamond. It was stolen several times, lost and found again, but whoever was its owner, died of a sudden death. The most fabulous diamond in the world is definitely Koh-I-Nor and it is believed that whoever owns it, rules the world. Now it is in the possession of the British royal family. There is also another interesting diamond named Sancy, a pale-yellow diamond of a highly unusual look, shield-shaped stone of Indian origin. These are just some of the most impressive diamonds in the world. But one thing is for sure, diamonds by all their features are something special and the love of a gentle gender for them is truly unbreakable.
