Due to its valuable geo-traffic position between the rivers Cetina and Neretva and the sea and Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Imotski region has always been a very important area. This is where the Romans established their roads and by doing that secured their power, exploitation and trade. Although some roads have been there even before the Romans appeared on the stage, most of the ancient roads were built by the Roman legions. Apart from being used for military purposes, that is, to enable faster communication within the said area, they were also used for passenger and cargo transport. With a 5-6 meter width and a firm surface, they also had mileposts with distances measured in Roman miles.
The main Roman road which started from Salona, passed through Trilj and reached Neretva, ran through the Imotski region in the north-west – south-east direction. In this region, it passed through the following settlements – Biorine-Cista-Lovreć-Lokvičići-Krivodol-Podbablje-Runovići, then reached Drinovci in the neighbouring Bosnia and Herzegovina, and ended in Narona. The aforementioned main road branched off into three side roads, two towards the north and one towards the east.
