25th October – Croatian Blood Donor Day

Ever since 1963 Croatia marks a Blood Donor Day on 25th October. Voluntary blood donors do not merely give a part of themselves, they selflessly save human lives. However, doning blood is not just life-saving aid, but has many benefits for a donor as well. Primarily, there is an unmeasurable joy one feels when saving somebody’s life. Additionally, one should be grateful for being able to donate blood in the first place, since only completely healthy people can be donors. Respectively, blood pressure and heart rate will be checked before the very donation, so you will be informed if there is anything wrong.
Did you know that donating blood reduces risk of heart diseases?
Regular blood donations help at maintaining iron level in blood, especially with men. Even though iron is one of key elements responsible for normal functioning of an organism, iron overload in an organism causes many life-threatening problems. Namely, iron is accumulated in organs like liver, heart or pancreas causing cirosis, cardiac arrhythmias and diabetes. Donating blood may help you in eliminating excess iron from your organism. Did you also know that one blood donation helps you to burn 650 calories?
However, if you think this could be an ideal way to control your body weight, you are very mistaken. You see, blood can be donated once in three months, not more. Finally, blood donating is a very safe procedure with no bad consequences for a voluntary donor. Besides doing a good deed, blood donation also serves to a donor as health-control mechanism. Therefore, don’t be afraid of donating blood, instead, if you are in opportunity, celebrate this day and become the next blood donor.
